Botox vs. Dysport vs. Daxxify: Which Neurotoxin Is Right for You?

You’ve heard of Botox. You may have heard of Dysport. But Daxxify? Xeomin? If you’ve been looking into wrinkle relaxers and found yourself confused by the number of options, you’re not alone – and honestly, the confusion is understandable. These are four different products that do essentially the same thing, yet each has real differences that make one a better fit for certain people, certain areas, and certain goals.

At TréBella Med Spa in Meridian, Idaho, we offer all four neurotoxins. That’s not common – most clinics stock one or two. We do it because the best result comes from matching the right product to the right person, not defaulting to whatever’s on the shelf.

Here’s everything you need to know to have an informed conversation at your consultation.

First: What Is a Neurotoxin (and Why Do People Get Them)?

All four of these products – Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and Daxxify – are neuromodulators made from botulinum toxin type A. When injected in small, precise amounts into targeted facial muscles, they temporarily reduce the muscle’s ability to contract. The result: the overlying skin smooths out, existing lines soften, and new lines are prevented from forming.

The key word is temporary. These aren’t permanent changes. Results last anywhere from 3 to 6 months depending on the product, your metabolism, and how active the treated muscles are. That’s actually a feature for first-timers – if you don’t love the result, it fades.

Neurotoxins are the most popular non-surgical aesthetic treatment in the world for good reason: they work, they’re fast, the downtime is minimal, and when done well, results look completely natural.

The Four Neurotoxins: Side by Side

Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA)

Botox is the original and still the most recognized name in wrinkle relaxers – FDA-approved for cosmetic use since 2002. It’s been studied more than any other neurotoxin and has a long, well-documented safety record.

Best for: Most areas of the face. A reliable, predictable choice for first-timers and experienced clients alike.
Onset: Typically 3-7 days for full effect.
Duration: 3-4 months for most clients.
Why choose it: You want the tried-and-true option with the most clinical data behind it.

Dysport (abobotulinumtoxinA)

Dysport has been used in Europe for decades and gained FDA approval in the US in 2009. Its molecular structure is slightly different from Botox, which gives it two notable characteristics: it tends to kick in faster, and it spreads more broadly from the injection site.

Best for: Large areas like the forehead, where broader diffusion is actually an advantage. Can create a very smooth, natural result across the brow.
Onset: Often visible within 1-3 days – faster than Botox.
Duration: 3-4 months, comparable to Botox.
Why choose it: You want faster onset or you’ve tried Botox and felt the results were patchy in larger areas.

Note: Dysport is dosed differently than Botox – the unit counts are not equivalent. Your TréBella provider will always quote you by unit for whichever product is right for you.

Xeomin (incobotulinumtoxinA)

Xeomin is sometimes called the “naked” neurotoxin because its manufacturing process strips away accessory proteins, leaving only the active botulinum toxin molecule. Those accessory proteins, present in Botox and Dysport, are not harmful – but over years of treatment, some clients develop antibodies to them, which can reduce how well the product works.

Best for: Clients who have been receiving neurotoxin treatments for years and feel their results aren’t lasting as long as they used to. Also a strong option for clients with sensitivities.
Onset: 3-7 days, similar to Botox.
Duration: 3-4 months.
Why choose it: You’ve had neurotoxins before and feel they’re becoming less effective, or you prefer the purified formulation.

Daxxify (daxibotulinumtoxinA-lanm)

Daxxify is the newest FDA-approved neurotoxin on the market, and it’s genuinely different from the others. Rather than using human serum albumin as a stabilizer (as Botox does), Daxxify uses a proprietary peptide technology. This changes how the toxin binds to nerve receptors – and the result is significantly longer-lasting effects.

In clinical trials, Daxxify showed a median duration of approximately 6 months, with some patients seeing results last up to 9 months. For context, that’s roughly double the duration of traditional Botox.

Best for: Clients who are frustrated by how quickly their results fade, frequent travelers who can’t keep up with 3-month appointments, or anyone who wants to reduce the number of treatments per year.
Onset: 2-5 days.
Duration: 6 months average, with some patients reporting results up to 9 months.
Why choose it: You want to go longer between appointments. Simple as that.

How Do You Know Which One Is Right for You?

The honest answer: that’s what your consultation is for. There’s no universal “best” neurotoxin – the right product depends on:

  • Your treatment history – Are you new to injectables, or have you been getting Botox for years?

  • The area being treated – Crow’s feet respond differently than the forehead. Your ’11s’ (the vertical lines between your brows) respond differently than lip lines.

  • Your lifestyle and schedule – If you travel frequently or have a hard time keeping appointments, Daxxify’s longer duration is a real advantage.

  • Your anatomy – Muscle mass and activity level affect how long any neurotoxin lasts. Some people are naturally fast metabolizers.

  • Your goals – Are you treating existing lines, preventing new ones, or both?

At TréBella, we don’t have a preferred product we push. We have a genuine conversation with every client, look at what you’re working with, and recommend what we actually believe will give you the best result.

What Does the Appointment Look Like?

A neurotoxin appointment at TréBella is quick. Most treatment sessions take 10-20 minutes. Here’s the general flow:

  1. Consultation (first visit): We discuss your goals, review your medical history, and map out a treatment plan. This is complimentary.

  2. Before photos: We take photos in consistent lighting so you (and we) can accurately assess results.

  3. Treatment: Small injections with a fine-gauge needle into the targeted muscles. Most clients describe the sensation as a quick pinch.

  4. Aftercare instructions: We’ll send you home with clear, simple guidelines – nothing complicated.

  5. Follow-up: We recommend a 2-week check-in to assess results and make any minor adjustments if needed.

No numbing cream is required for most clients, and you can return to your regular activities immediately. Avoid intense exercise, lying flat, and rubbing the treated area for the first four hours.
